In short, the Department of Infectious Diseases involves the treatment of diseases resulting from microbial infections which was called a plague in the past. These days, the importance of this field is highlighted as the development of various kinds of antibiotics and the increased resistance to them, advancement of invasive medical procedures, and a growing number of patients with declined immune system due to antibiotics treatment and transplantation.
The Department of Infectious Disease deals with fever of unknown origin, diseases accompanied by fever or skin rash, septicemia, disease with palpable lymph nodes, diseases accompanied by diarrhea, digestive infections such as gastritis, cardiovascular infections, urogenital infections, skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory infections, osteoarticular infections, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and its associated various opportunistic infections, tsutsugamushi disease, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, local and imported malaria infections, and diseases suspected of being infected during overseas travels. We believe that consultation and collaboration with other departments and divisions are very important especially on fever-associated diseases, and conduct investigation, care, and education on hospital acquired infection in cooperation with the Office for Infection Control to prevent hospital acquired infection. We also give advice when the health authorities develop policies on communicable disease control.
The Department of Infectious Disease handles bacterial diseases as well as virus that causes skin rash, herpes zoster, chickenpox, German measles, mumps, measles, infectious mononucleosis, and AIDS, fungus (mold) that causes candidiasis and aspergillosis, protozoan and parasite that cause malaria, tapeworms, roundworms pulmonary distoma, and hepatic distoma, and diseases such as Korean hemorrhagic fever which is febrile disease that often occurs in autumn especially in Korea, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, and tsutsugamushi disease. Besides we offer not only counseling and treatment regarding side effects of various drugs including antibiotics, interactions and control, adult immunization, venereal disease, and infection prevention during travels (malaria and yellow fever), but also restricted antibiotics and infection control and treatment of employees exposed to blood-mediated diseases.
