Radiation oncology is a specialty of medicine that involves the therapeutic applications of ionizing radiation to treat disease, especially cancers.
As it entails knowledge of physics and biology, radiation oncology is comprised of three divisions: Radiation Therapy, Radiation Biology, and Radiation Physics.
Radiation therapy (or radiotherapy) is a clinical modality that uses various forms of ionizing radiation in the treatment of patients with cancer. Radiation therapy seeks to eradicate or shrink the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue from radiation damage.
As it is one of the three major anti-cancer therapies, radiation therapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery, chemotherapy and/or biologic therapy to cure or alleviate cancer. Radiation therapy can be applied against cancers that occur in almost any area of the body - the central nervous system, head and neck, thorax, gastrointestinal system, genitourinary system, gynecology, hematology, bone and soft tissue, pediatric, metastasis, etc. Occasionally, radiation therapy may also be applied non cancerous conditions such as thyroid-associated orbitopathy, hypertrophic scar, arterio-venous malformation, heterotopic ossification, etc.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Asan Medical Center is nationally renowned for providing the highest level of treatment and care to cancer patients. Specially trained board certified radiation oncologists offer a wide range of radiation therapy that includes the most advanced forms of treatment. Faculty members participate in the activities of the Asan Cancer Center where patients' evaluation and treatment are now performed by multidisciplinary teams organized according to cancer diagnosis.
