Ears, Nose, and Throat treatment for Our Patients

The term otorhinolaryngology, the term otorhinolaryngology is also used, comes from a combination of words oto (ear), rhino (nose), and larynx (throat) Otorhinolaryngology is a special area in medicine that is concerned with various diseases related to the ear, nose, sinus, head, neck, throat, mouth, salivary gland, thyroid, trachea and esophagus. It deals with an extensive area of the human body that includes important organs.

What Does Your AMC Otolaryngologist Do?

Specialists at AMC Department of Otorhinolaryngology perform various surgical and non-surgical procedures to treat the patients' ear, nose, sinus, throat, mouth, neck, thyroid, salivary gland, thyroid, trachea and esophagus. Some of the commonly known and conventionally performed procedures are adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, surgeries for chronic rhinosinusitis and chronic otitis media.

There are several procedures that have been developed more recently. Microsurgeries employing cutting-edge microscopic equipment are effective in treating various diseases in the ears. The latest surgical methods allow not only complete removal of benign and malignant tumors on the head and neck, but also improved cosmetic and functional reconstruction of this area. Once regarded as highly complicated and risky, skull base surgeries are now possible using developed techniques and technology. Implantation of artificial cochlea, for patients suffering from deafness, is another of the new procedures that offers many people an opportunity to obtain a better quality of life.

Also, advanced auditory testing devices are used in researches to determine the cause of hearing loss. Impairment to the sense of equilibrium, such as dizziness, is an area of focus in recent researches in neuro-otology (study of the nerves in the ear)

Recent developments in otorhinolaryngology includes various new methods of accurate diagnosis and effective treatments for diseases of growing concern. Nasal and upper airway allergies, for instance, are now often treated by medication, desensitization therapy, and surgery.
Among the recently developed minimally-invasive procedures is endoscopic sinus surgery, which allows for a shorter recovery time for the patient. Also, in response to increased interests in rhinoplasty, AMC otolaryngologists are participating in researches to develop new procedures that will improve the functional and cosmetic potential of the nose.

AMC Department of Otorhinolaryngology is also actively participating in research with regard to head and neck cancers. Our researches have contributed to the recent development of cancer treatment, based on a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
